She’s the daughter of Alok Nagar, the zamindar of her village, born into one of the richest families around. Yet, she was never allowed to go beyond Class 8. Still, in her village, she remains the most educated girl—no other girl has even passed eighth grade.

All the girls she grew up with are already married off. Nandani, though, has been raised in comfort and affection as the only daughter in the house, doted on by her four brothers who adore her. She looks silent on the outside, but she observes everything. Nandani may be soft-spoken, but she’s far from weak.

*Sumitra Devi, Nandani’s mother*, runs the household with an iron grip. She keeps her four daughters-in-law in line with just a glance, and even Nandani flinches under her stare. *Alok Nagar*, the village zamindar and sarpanch, is a man of terrible temper. Nandani doesn’t dare speak in front of him. He married his sons into influential families to expand his power, and the entire village fears him. No one dares meet his eyes. He knows every person’s business, punishes mistakes without mercy, and never forgives. He’s molded his sons in his own image, and now he’s raising his grandsons the same way.

*Vineet Nagar*, the eldest son, manages the fields and is set to take over as sarpanch after his father. The village already fears him.

*Avantika, Vineet’s wife*, spends her days managing the household as the eldest daughter-in-law. She’s terrified of her husband and mother-in-law, but she loves her sons fiercely.
